Tulsa’s Southern Hills Country Club, which is steeped in professional golf tradition, added to its lore Tuesday.

The PGA of America announced that Southern Hills will host the 2032 PGA Championship, making it the first venue to host the tournament six times.

SHCC previously hosted the 2022, 2007, 1994, 1982 and 1970 PGA Championships, as well as the 2021 Senior PGA Championship.

“We are honored that Southern Hills Country Club will host the 2032 PGA Championship,” Brett Pratt, president of Southern Hills Country Club, said in a statement. “We are grateful to continue our wonderful long-standing partnership with the PGA of America. Hosting this Championship for a record sixth time underscores our club’s rich tradition and commitment to the game of golf. We eagerly anticipate welcoming the world’s best golfers and spectators to our course and sharing Southern Hills, the city of Tulsa and the state of Oklahoma with the entire world.”

Southern Hills celebrated the announcement with a news conference on its grounds.

When the PGA Championship was held at SHCC three years ago, it generated nearly $83 million in direct, indirect and induced spending in the Tulsa economy. Tacking on the $75 million spent on-site at SHCC, the economic impact on the local economy was nearly $160 million.

“This is just such a huge industry for Oklahoma,” Renee McKenney, senior vice president of tourism for the Tulsa Regional Chamber and president of Tulsa Regional Tourism, said at the news conference. “Tourism is the third-largest industry here. So, to showcase events of this magnitude and to bring people here is just so important.”

Southern Hills’ championship course consistently is recognized as one of the top 100 golf courses in the country and world, with Golf Digest including it among its 100 greatest courses since 1966.

“Southern Hills Country Club has long stood as a crown jewel in American golf, with a storied legacy of hosting the sport’s most prestigious championships,” Mike Neal, president and CEO of the Tulsa Regional Chamber, said in a statement. “Securing the 2032 PGA Championship further cements its place in history and reaffirms Tulsa’s reputation as a premier destination for world-class events. Besides providing unmatched national and international visibility for the city, the Championship also undoubtedly will exceed the $157.7 million total economic impact it made the last time it was here in 2022, boosting businesses across the region.”

Other speakers at the news conference in Tulsa included Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols and Oklahoma Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell.

“In 2022, there were some 144 hours of coverage of the tournament on-air and online among CBS, ESPN and the Golf Channel,” Nichols said. “Every time the broadcast came into or out of a commercial, you’d see the beautiful shots of Southern Hills, the course and Tulsa.

“That was the equivalent of nearly $1.2 billion in advertising exposure. When these events come to Tulsa, Tulsa gets to share its story with the world.  It’s proof that Tulsa is no longer a city in the background. Thanks to the efforts of the Tulsa Regional Chamber, Tulsa Regional Tourism and the Tulsa Sports Commission, Tulsa is now a go-to destination for high-profile meetings, big-ticket events and world-class sports, like the PGA Championship.”
